Cholera outbreak: Partners gather to identify lessons learned during response

Juba, 8 August 2025 - The South Sudan Red Cross (SSRC), with support from the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), convened a one-day workshop to reflect on the cholera outbreak response and identify key lessons learned. The event brought together critical partners, including the Ministry of Health, represented by Dr. Kedende Chuol, Director General for Preventive Health Services, alongside other officials and humanitarian actors.

SSRC's first perception research: A milestone after a decade of existence

Thirteen years after its inception, the South Sudan Red Cross (SSRC) embarked on its first perception research, a significant milestone made possible by the support of the Finnish Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). This comprehensive study spanned the entire Red Cross Movement, with a particular focus on the SSRC, and was conducted in the regional capitals of Juba, Wau, and Malakal.

A 35-year-old Hellen Nyibol, a rural woman living in Kolchit village, Rumbek Central County says her two kids were involved in a road traffic accident while attempting to cross a highway to get drinking water from a well that was about 20 kilometers from home.

Juba branch of the South Sudan Red Cross emerged the winners of the 7th National First Aid Competition this year, recording their second win after they were first crowned the winners in the year 2016. Yambio Branch became the second winning team and Kuajok took the third position.

More than 63,000 returnees and refugees get assistance

The South Sudan Red Cross has given assistance to 63,978 people who escaped the fighting in Sudan and entered South Sudan from April to Semtember 2023. The locations where distribution of food, essential household items and cash were given include Aweil, Kuajok, Bentiu, Raja, Maban, Malakal, Wau, Kodok, Renk.

These will ensure that "People live healthy lives with access to health care and WASH facilities, and practice health promotion based on knowledge and changed attitudes". To achieve this, SSRC will pursue improved health-seeking behaviours, prevention, and control of communicable diseases, and increased access to health and WASH service delivery to the affected population in South Sudan. Disaster Risk Management

The goal of Disaster Risk Management is to ensure that ‘‘People mitigate effects of climate change and preserve the environment through performing risk reduction and preparedness initiatives, and possess capacities to respond to disasters, conflicts, and other emergencies while ensuring food security and livelihood.

Protection, Gender and Inclusion

People who are marginalized and vulnerable are included, protected, empowered, and actively engaged in their communities. SSRC affirms its commitment to the Minimum Protection Approach as exposure to threats such as SGBV, child abuse, Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA), and intercommunal violence. SSRC will continue being a leading actor in Psychosocial Support (PSS) and Sexual, and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) prevention in South Sudan, and these will remain key priority areas for the National Society during this strategic period.
